ready or not, here it comes

i really need to carry my camera with me at all times, because it would allow me to get better images of this kind of thing.

i haven't quite figured out what happened. all i know is that i walked up the stairs from the place d'armes metro, on my way to pick up some groceries in chinatown and, when i reached the exit level, water was coming at me. it was coming in quite a flood, as i think you can see in this photo, hastily taken with my mobile phone while while i was being jostled by similarly confused fellow travelers.

this wasn't the high water mark, either. as i stood there, trying to get a decent shot, i noticed the indoor tide rising. glad i thought to wear some pretty massive boots, or this would have been uncomfortable, to say the least. at an estimate, i'd say that inside of a minute, i went from standing on dry ground to being in almost two inches of water and there was still more coming.

all this serves to remind me of the strange sense of delight i get in seeing these sorts of oddities- things being where they really, really shouldn't. if you look on the stairs, there's actually quite a pretty waterfall happening... it's just not some place where you normally think to find one. i'm sure i'd think differently if this were happening in my house, but, in a place where i have the luxury of being able to escape unscathed, it has an undeniable charm.

save me

amidst the agonisingly detailed and yet strangely uninformative coverage of this afternoon's airline crash in the hudson river, i've heard a refrain that never ceases to grate on my nerves.

repeatedly, the announcers on the news marveled at the "miracle" that the plane landed and that no one was killed. that this happened is no doubt remarkable, but to say it's a miracle is to denigrate the work of the pilot, co-pilot and crew who were actually responsible for the plane's landing and for getting the passengers out of the plane to be rescued. pilots are trained for this kind of thing, but landing a passenger plane on a narrow strip of water between two densely populated metropolises goes well beyond what any training program could cover.

if i wake up tomorrow and find out that the entire crew passed out before landing and that the plane guided itself by chance to the hudson, then, i will agree, that is something that could be deemed miraculous. because in that case, it would have happened without any attempt at intervention and direction. but as it stands, there was quite clearly a reason why events unfolded the way that they did, which does not require recourse to divine intervention.

to be fair, there has been plenty of praise given to the pilot, but why not leave it at that? he did something remarkable and deserves recognition. end transmission.

not seeing red

****************warning!!!! girlie post!!!!!!**************

so i've been thinking, as i often seem to do during the winter, that i might like to change up the hair colour a little. my natural colour, if memory serves, is that sort of nondescript tone that no one actually wants, hovering on the bland border between blond and brown. i've been changing that to light blond, but i'd given some thought to trying out red, a colour i often used in the past. i'm too cheap to actually go to a salon and pay them to do it, so i figured i'd see what was available at the local drug store (where i usually get my hair care products).

it seems that at some point, i missed a memo declaring that all shades of red need to be visible from space. i've done all sorts of funky colours with my hair and i like them fine on other people, but at this point, i'm in my mid-thirties and have no desire to look like one of those women who's desperately trying to prove she's still hip by dyeing her head burgundy. (on a side note, i've never understood why burgundy is the colour of middle-age rebellion.) i actually have a lot of red tone in my hair as it is, so it can look fairly natural, which i like, but at the same time interesting, which i also like.

i would not have thought that achieving auburn would be so difficult. i'd like my hair to be red. i don't need it to stop traffic or protect me on a hunting expedition. back when i did want my hair to look like i'd descended from popsicles, this was not difficult. now, apparently, things have changed.

now i'm remembering why i've stuck with blond.

when the internet tells you to shut up

i've noticed that whenever i try to post comments to other people's blogs, i'm required now to select a profile to post from (because having a blogger i.d. apparently isn't enough) and to type in a word verification. the problem is that the word i'm supposed to type is blank. i can't see it and i can't advance without entering it. the internet has officially told me to mind my own business... i'll be over here in the corner, thinking about your blogs...

foetus :: ramrod

oh, it all started out so well, but there then followed a brief period, where the always helpful katacombes staff had to figure out why the sound wasn't working and why only one cd player seemed to function. there was music playing during that time, but it wasn't really music i intended to play. for a few minutes, this looked like it was going to turn into my shortest dj set ever, but providence prevailed and things continued...
